Fred A. Merrett

Fred Merrett introduced handbells into his high school music program in Winnipeg in 1966 - that was a 'first' for Manitoba - and followed suit when he moved to Edmonton in 1973. Mr. Merrett has been an influential force in developing handbell programs and handbells are now used extensively in Alberta schools. He has been guest clinician/conductor at numerous events, held leadership positions in various Guilds and recently completed 25 years as the coordinator and instructor at the International Music Camp on the border between Manitoba and North Dakota.

Fred is a well-known handbell composer/arranger, having more than 100 publications in print and having won numerous awards. In 1988 he won two categories of the AGEHR Area II Composition Contest with Merry-Go-Round and Pinafore Patter (which was performed in Carnegie Hall by the Echo Choir of Japan.) Merry-Go-Round was chosen for the Canadian mass ringing item for the 4th International Handbell Symposium in Korea in 1990 as well as the 5th Symposium in Edmonton in 1992. His Suite of Canadian Folksongs was chosen to be the mass ringing number representing Canada at the 6th Symposium in Australia in 1994, and In 2002, his Jack Was Every Inch a Sailor was the Canadian mass ringing piece at the 2002 International Sumposium in Korea.

Mr. Merrett served the American Guild as a member of the "Committee for Handbells in Formal Education" for six years and was on the teaching staff at the Directors' Convention in Denver in 1990. He frequently conducts workshops for directors and ringers in schools, churches and senior centers through Canada and the United States. Fred is the founder/conductor of the Bronze Harmony Handbell Choir, a community group in Edmonton.
